There was no Hunter Pence or Justin Upton type move by the Pirates on July 31. Rather, GM Neal Huntington opted to go with a series of smaller moves that the organization believes will not only help them this year, but in the future as well. NH ended up pulling the trigger on three trades before the 4:00 PM deadline. I'll present the trades in chronological order after the jump.

News broke around 3 o'clock that the Pirates were nearing a deal for Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez. It was confirmed minutes later by FOX's Ken Rosenthal that the Pirates did, in fact, acquire Sanchez.

With the designated hitter in use this weekend, the Pirates made a roster move by calling up outfielder Gorkys Hernandez from AAA-Indianapolis. He is best known for his glove rather than his bat, so you wouldn't have expected him to be called up in this situation.
In 38 games this year in Indianapolis, Hernandez is hitting .266 with two home runs and 14 RBIs. His OBP is .343, which is considered to be above average. Hernandez is replacing Evan Meek's spot in the 25-man roster, after his horrible outing Wednesday in Washington.
