The Pirates announced today that they had activated reliever Juan Cruz from the 15 day disabled list and optioned rookie reliever Jared Hughes back down to Triple-A Indy. Cruz was put on the DL retroactive to July 18th with inflammation in his pitching shoulder.
Cruz is 1-1 with a 2.61 ERA so far this season in 37 appearances. He is in his 12th year in the bigs, and this season has been one of his best campaigns. He has a 9.3 K/9 and a 1.88 K/BB ratio. Hopefully he will provide some stability to a struggling Pirates bullpen.
Jared Hughes was 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA and was sent down solely to make room for Cruz. He has been successful this season as a reliever. He had a 5.1 K/9 and a 1.78 K/BB ratio.
